Why Russia-loving Steve’s job with the BBC was a dream come true after letters penning so many

HITTING A HIGH NOTE: Steve plays the Match of the Day theme tune alongside Owain Wyn Evans

IT was probably not the kind of video that Steve Rosenberg expected to go viral. For the BBC’s Russia correspondent has reported on many tumultuous events in the country, including the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster and the Beslan school attack in 2004.

But it was a clip of Steve, a talented pianist, and BBC North-West Tonight weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans performing the Match of the Day theme tune which attracted so much attention on social media last month.

“During the coronavirus lockdown, we have all had to find our ways to get through daily life,” Steve told me from his home in Moscow. “For me, that was through music.

“There had been a lot of musical collaborations online during lockdown, so someone on Twitter suggested that Owain and I do one together.

“He is a fantastic drummer and we thought the Match of the Day tune would be a good one to do, especially with the Premier League coming back.”

It is said that variety is the spice of life, and that is certainly true for Steve. Some correspondents can be posted to countries or regions where little happens day to day.

However, for Steve, that could not be further from the truth — previously he has reported on stories as diverse as the Buranovskiye Babushki grandmothers who represented Russia at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest to interviewing Sergey Naryshkin, the director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Services.
