Sellers made photography sound so ‘Swede’

GERED Mankowitz is looking out across the beautiful Rame Peninsular as we chat about his life and career.

The renowned photographer and wife Julia swapped London for Cornwall more than a decade ago, leaving the rat race behind for a more tranquil life on Britain’s south-west coast.

“I’d sold my studio and was focusing on my archive, but realised I could do that from pretty much anywhere,” Gered told me.

“Cornwall is somewhere we have always holidayed and loved.”

Now 75, he was at the heart of London’s cool scene during the Swinging Sixties — and well into the 1970s, too.

North London-raised Gered was official photographer for Marianne Faithfull and The Rolling Stones, joining the latter on their American tour in 1965.

Add to that his work with Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Slade, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Kim Wilde, Oasis and many more, and he is considered one of the best music photographers the UK has produced.

And, like many who have been successful in a certain field, Gered knew from a young age the direction he wanted to head.
