For the past 43 years, he has been part of Beaverbrooks the Jewellers, the family business founded in 1919 in Belfast by his grandfather Isaac and great-uncles Harry and Maurice.

His role as company chairman takes up 60 per cent of his time, with civic, communal and charitable work making up the rest.

“If we are in a position to do so, then we have a responsibility to make a difference,” Mark told me from his Cheshire home. “I get so much back from it and have met so many incredible people.

“If you ask my wife, Gabrielle, I am far too busy — in fact, I am 63 now and and I have never been busier.”

Mark may be head honcho at Beaverbrooks but he is far from the stereotypical tyrannical boss.

Since 2004, Beaverbrooks has been in the top 20 of the Sunday Times’ Best Companies to Work For list, finishing first in 2021 and 2009, and sixth this year.

In 2008, Mark was awarded the Best Companies’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and he has won the Leadership Award seven times.

“When I first started working for Beaverbrooks, I went out to our shops, which is where I discovered my interest in people, and those who specifically worked within the business,” he said.
