Birmingham-born Mordechai, who is now happily married to Southport-born Ruth Silver (nee Salkind), was born into an ardent evangelical Christian family. His maternal grandparents would missionise in Birmingham’s Bullring Open Market.

He said: “We were dyed in the wool Christian.

“Our evangelical Pentecostal church was very happy-clappy and had a very missionary mindset.”
