Egyptian put Isabel in a ‘tights’ spot with request

WHEN Isabel Kershner visited her aunt and uncle in the Israeli city of Herzilya as a wide-eyed teenager, there was sand where, decades later, roads would be laid.

The year was 1978 and the Salfordian was in the Jewish state for the first time on her own.

It was a country which would become known as the high-tech “start-up nation”, and where the financial disparity between rich and poor became glaringly evident.

But, for a 14-year-old Isabel, Israel was the place she wanted to be.

And, in 1990, she emigrated there, becoming a senior editor for Middle East and Palestinian affairs at The Jerusalem Report.
