IN the annals of Jewish and Israeli history, certain narratives often remain obscure, overshadowed by dominant stories.
One such narrative is that of Israel’s Black Panthers, a group that sought to expose and challenge the systemic racism and socio-economic disparities faced by Mizrachim in Israel.
And journalist Asaf Elia-Shalev brings this untold story to light in his book, Israel’s Black Panthers: The Radicals Who Punctured a Nation’s Founding Myth (University of California Press).
Born in Los Angeles to an Iraqi father and a Bulgarian mother, Asaf moved to Israel at 14, where he would later attend high school, and the University of California, Berkeley.
