Why uncle officiated at wedding in London

Rosemary Wenzerul, of St Albans, is trying to trace descendants of Fanny Feldman (nee Messer), who was the wife of Leonard Isaac Feldman.

They were married on June 2, 1914 in the Great Synagogue, London, by the bridegroom's uncle, Dayan Asher Feldman.

In 1915, they lived at 4 Hanover Gardens, Broughton Park, Salford.

They had a daughter Margaret, who was named after her grandmother.

They also had a son Marcus M Feldman, who married Blanche Goldberg at Hampstead Synagogue, London.

In 1934, Leonard was the president of the Higher Broughton Hebrew Congregation.

Fanny was the daughter of Margaret and Joachim Messer.

When Margaret died, Joachim married Rosemary's great aunt, Hannah Maria (known as Maria) Goldston (daughter of Rev Abraham and Amelia Goldston, of London).

Her brothers were Rev Isaac Goldston, of New West End Synagogue, Rev Nehemiah Goldston, of South East London Synagogue, Rev Joseph Goldston, headmaster of the Jacob Nathan School, Plymouth, Sim Goldston, of Canada, and Harry Goldston, of USA.

Her sisters were Frances Sandelson (married to Rabbi Yochiel Sandelson, of Newcastle) and Esther Levy.

ARMY SEARCH

COLONEL Martin Newman, chairman of the Jewish committee for Her Majesty's Forces, is trying to help a Jewish member of the Armed Forces trace his Jewish roots and family in Manchester.

He was born and lived in Crumpsall and was put up for adoption as a very young child.

He knows little of his family, but knows that his grandfather, who died around 2000, was called Alfred Isaac Gillatt (Gilatt/Glatt). He believes he might have an aunt living in the north Manchester area.
