DAUGAVPILS, in eastern Latvia, is a city with a notable Jewish heritage and a gateway to the sparsely populated Latgale region, which borders Belarus, Russia and Estonia.
In common with urban hubs such as Graz in Austria, Antwerp in Belgium and Tartu in neighbouring Estonia, Daugavpils is Latvia's second city.
In terms of international tourism, second cities tend to stand deep in the shadow of their respective capitals and Daugavpils is no exception.
Inevitably, capital cities have direct air links with other countries, making them easy places to explore during short breaks.
