Eli starts a search for shul's records

ELI Weller, of Bnei Brak, is looking for the pinkas hakhillah (community ledger) of the Manchester Central Synagogue in Heywood Street.

His father, Enoch Weller, was born in Manchester in 1925 to Jonah (John) Weller who had a fish and vegetable shop at 321 Waterloo Road.

Jonah had arrived in England with his parents Aaron and Chana Weller from Vilkaviskis, Luthuania, around 1885.

In an article Vilkaviskis-Manchester, there are pictures of members of the synagogue - possibly including Eli's relatives.

Eli would like to see the ledgers to find out more information about his family.

Shop assistance

ROCHELLE Cooke, of Wetherby, wants any information on her grandparents Isaac Zendle and his first wife Rachel Herscowitz.

They initially lived in Mancester in Bell Street, over the Warsaw Shul.

They then lived in Cheetham Hill Road and had a grocery shop which was taken over by their daughter, Betty, after Isaac's death. Rachel had predeceased him and he had married Ethel.

"I remember a very old-fashioned shop with sacks of potatoes and a barrel of herrings, a long wooden counter and a huge till," Rochelle said.

She would also like a picture of the shop.
