Percy ran cheder in Leeds

YUVAL Walters would like to know more about his father's family in Leeds.

Merton Walters, who was born in 1925, grew up in Leeds. He left Leeds Grammar School in 1940, and immediately emigrated to South Africa with his mother and sister.

His father, Percy Walters, ran 'The Walters Cheder' at the United Hebrew Congregation in Leeds.

He stayed behind in Leeds when the rest of the family emigrated.

Shul visit

JANET Rosenberg Wayne is visiting Manchester this month.

She is hoping to discover more about her maternal grandfather, Abraham Jacob Harris.

Abraham and his siblings, who were born in Manchester, were the children of Russian-born Hyman and Mary Phillips Harris.

In Manchester, they lived at 30 Charlotte Street, Cheetham Hill.

Janet would like to visit any shul of which they were members.

Sea stories

DETAILS are being sought of all Jews who served in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War.

Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women archivist Martin Sugarman is preparing a record of honour and is looking for information from the provinces.

He is hoping to receive details such as name, rank and skills of Merchant sailors; what happened to them during the war - sinkings, wounds, if killed in action or survived; home town and photos in uniform or overalls.

PIPPA Reid is trying to contact anyone with connections to the Nat Younkman Czardas Band, which toured the UK from the 1930s to 1950s and ended up in Manchester. Nat's wife was Millie and his daughters were Pamela and Dorothy.
