A JEWISH Telegraph reader in Italy is researching his mother's side of the family, who lived in Manchester.

Steve Boler, whose home is in Scalea, has records of the Mazorkoff and Kapatofsky families.

But he would like more information on the Mendle family, who were based in Cheetham Hill.

Hyman Mendle, who died in 1964, was married to Gertie Goldstein, who pre-deceased him in 1948.

Their children were Frank, Rachel, who married Reuben Adelman in 1947, Maxie, who married Rebecca (Betty) Gilbert, Pearl (Annie), who married James (Jim) Boler, Miriam, who married Harry Gray (Graybine), and Bernard.

Steve said: "Hyman and Gertie lived in Pimblott Street and later in Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill.

"Hyman was a baker. Rachel and Reuben lived in Sagar Street, Strangeways, and Bellot Street, Cheetham. They later moved to Prestwich.

"They were both raincoat machinists and worked in many factories.

"Maxie and Betty lived in Vernon Street, Cheetham, and later moved to Prestwich.

"Maxie had a horse and cart and sold fruit and veg. He eventually advanced to a van.

"His rounds were Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Whitefield and Crumpsall.

"I remember in school holidays going out with him for 10 shillings."

Steve explained that Pearl and James lived in Stretford - and later Sale - before they moved to Italy.

Pearl was a raincoat machinist and worked in many factories with her sister Rachel.

James was a master baker. Miriam and Harry lived in Sunnybank and, for a time, in Dublin and Florida.

Eventually they returned to the UK and lived in Whitefield.

Bernard was killed in Cheetwood Street, Cheetham Hill, in December, 1940, during the Manchester Blitz.

Steve added: "I have an old 1940 newspaper cutting about him, but it is now rather yellow and tatty."

"I remember on Saturday afternoons listening to their stories in English and Yiddish.

"They were great times."
