MANUEL WAITS FOR MORE RESULTS

MANUEL SILVER of Illinois knows the power of Roots Directory.

Last year he asked for information about an inscribed kiddush cup and medal, heirlooms of his maternal grandfather Manuel (Mendel) Shooler (1868-1926), who married Mary Shinwell.

Some months later he received a letter from someone who it turned out was his second cousin.

His new-found relative only discovered the link when he found the article among the effects of his recently deceased uncle, Ernest Shinwell, of Glasgow.

Manuel is now hoping readers can help him with another enquiry. His grandfather was an officer of the Leeds Duke of Connaught Lodge of the Grand Order of Israel.

He has found a silver medal inscribed: ‘‘M&PJFS&BCS. Presented to Bro M Shooler for Good Service 1905.’’

SHAWN GOLD of Toronto wants to know about his Scottish family. They lived in Gorbals and the family name is Morgan.

There were a few Morgans who arrived from Russia around 1890 but Shawn is looking for the family of Charles Morgan, who left for America around 1902. 

Charles took one daughter from Russia and had children Emanual (Mendel Harris) Morgan, born in 1893; Pauline Morgan (Shawn’s grandmother), born in 1895; Barnett (Barney) Morgan born in 1897; Hannah Morgan born in 1898; and Moses David Morgan, born in 1900. 

Charles’ father was Judah Mendel Morgan. However, Shawn is confused as there appears to be either three Judahs or he was married three times to Sepa Levit, Rebecca Fest and Bella Joseph. 

Charles had a brother Israel Morgan who married Anna Rosen in 1895; a sister Dora Morgan who married Albert Rosen; a brother Reuben (Robert) Morgan who married Mary Abramowitz in 1891; a sister Bessie Morgan who married Atkins; and another sister Rachel Morgan who married Joseph Sherman in 1894.

LEE HALEY of Australia nee Haley is looking for information on her husband’s great great great grandfather John Tournoff.

He was born in Manchester around 1848. His father was George Tournoff. 

John married Mary Ann Rowles in 1884 in New Brighton, Merseyside. On the marriage certificate he is listed as a widower. 

John and Mary Ann had four children, Elizabeth (Bessie), Charles, Sarah and Alice. Alice emigrated to Australia, followed by Sarah then Charles.

John may have had at least two brothers named Joshua and Samuel who lived in Bethnal Green and Stoke Newington around 1881-189. 

Louise Tournoff, one of Joshua’s daughters, was teaching at the Hull Hebrew Girls School in 1892.

ILENE GAINSAY of Oregon wants to trace her mother’s family, who emigrated to Liverpool from either Russia or Poland.

Ilene’s grandparents were Israel and Rebecca Gothelph. Their children were called Abe, David, Celia, Rose, May, Anne, Miriam, Sadie and Harry. Ilene believes that when the family moved to America they changed the surname to Gilbert.

RICA GOLDBERG of Manchester is looking for descendants of Rachel Cohen, born around 1870, the sister of her grandfather Abraham Cohen.

She appears on the 1881 Census, aged 11, living at 27 Cliff Street, Cheetham, Manchester with her brothers Abraham and Levi.

SHARYN EISENBERG WALLACE always believed her grandmother Gute (Gertrude) Smulian was from Manchester.

But she now thinks she was only passing through on her way from Vilna to America. Her passport says she left England in 1905. She came to Manchester in 1900, aged seven.

Her parents were named Shimon Shulian or Schimel Smulian and Pesse (Pauline/Bessie) Fox Smulian.

Shimon’s brother Isaac stayed in Manchester, and had two sons, Aaron and Mendel.

RUBEN MENDZIGURSKY of Israel contacted Roots Directory last month to find the Bookbinder bakers in Manchester. He has now sent more details through.

Ruben explains that he arrived in England in June 1939 on the kindertransport and was fostered by the Bowman family which lived at 164 Cheetham Hill Road.

Ruben’s father, Leiser Chiel, escaped from Germany at the start of the war. After being interned, he made his way to Manchester and was reunited with his family. They lived in Thirlmere Street until the mid-1940s.

He recalls the Bookbinder family’s bakery in Cheetham Hill and would also like to discover what happened to the Glass family which lived on Middleton Road and Yetta Segal of 343 Cheetham Hill Road.

JOEL BERMAN of Los Angeles has known about his cousins in Liverpool for a number of years. But he believes members of his family may be living in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Australia.

The family’s name in Poland was Bogen but on arriving in Liverpool it became Beacon.

In Belfast the family is Black. Joel wants to contact any family members still in Britain.
