AFTER tracking down his own lost relatives, Alan Harris is hoping to start the first Jewish Genealogy Society in Leeds. An open meeting is scheduled to take place at Leeds Makor on February 20 (7.30pm).

Alan became interested in genealogy during the early 80s as he approached retirement and had vague recollections of names and places that his parents had told him as a child.

''Although I was born in Leeds, my parents came from different parts of Poland, Lithuania and Germany,'' he said. ''I knew my family name was Schocken. One thing led to another and before I knew it, after writing to Schockem publishers in America, a long-lost relation had sent me a family tree, which included the Kramrisch family in Manchester.''

In 1997, Alan found cousin John Kramrisch of Manchester through Roots Directory.

The appeal brought an immediate result when a cousin, contacted him.

Research on the Internet since has resulted in Alan tracking down his great grandfather's descendants in Canada and South Africa, and a cousin in Buffalo.

ADA Gamsu of Johannesburg is trying to contact some of her cousins.

Celia and Issy Cohen used to live at 5 Belfield Road, Prestwich, Manchester.

Either Celia or Issy are connected to the Glick family who originated from Dusat/Dusiat in Lithuania, and their great grandparents could possibly have been Lazar and Chaie Glick.

It is possible that their grandmother was Chana who had siblings Hodel, Henka, Bessie, Israel, Welvel, Jake and Faivas. A lot of these descendants are living in America - in particular Philadelphia.

Ada is also trying to find cousins who are living in Liverpool and are descendants of the Glick family of Dusat, but she does not know their names.

Ada found an advert for kitchen firm Wilson & Glick Kitchens Ltd of Manchester M5 2UW. She would like to contact the Glick originator of this business.
