MANCHESTER estate agent Aubrey Lee is trying to trace the descendants of members of the Jewish Brigade who fought the Turks in Palestine in the First World War.

Aubrey's late father Morris Lee (formerly Lipshitz) arrived in this country from Latvia in 1912.

He was taken in by the Craft family in Stockport and then went into the clothing industry. He hated the sweatshop and volunteered for the British army at the age of 17.

Serving in the Royal Fusiliers, he was sent to Palestine. Along with other Jewish volunteers, he was drafted into the 38th, 39th and 40th Regiments - under Lieutenant Colonel Peterson - which became the Jewish Brigade.

Morris served in the 39th Brigade with the regimental number 321. He trained as a cook in Egypt and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He fought in the battles of Um-Shurt and Asalt in Jordan in 1916-17.

Morris, who late moved to St Annes, died in 1972.

Aubrey has since visited the Jewish Legion's Museum near Netanya and discovered that there were many British volunteers to the Jewish Brigade, including Harry Segal and Archie Hyman and a Mr Assinofski, of 74 Elizabeth Street, Cheetham, Manchester.

Fellow sons of legion members were also Yigal Yadin, Yitzhak Rabin, Mordechai Gur and Refael Eitan. Contact: 0161-980 2862.
