Football euphoria replaced with a day of disruption

THIS past week has seen some remarkable events in Britain. Watching them unfold on the telly in my living room in Netanya has been a rather strange experience.

The first was the General Election last Thursday. I knew that no significant news would emerge on the day itself; with the time difference, it would be midnight here when the polls closed back in the UK.

Regardless, I still tuned into Sky News to watch correspondents reporting from outside polling stations as voters came and went. Memories of voting in the hall of my local primary school, while still dressed in my work suit, came flooding back.

Unlike in Britain, where everyone goes to work on election day, here in Israel, everyone has the day off and heads for the beach or the countryside, popping into the polling station on their way.
