Crime-free Algarve island that bars cars and needs no police

Paul Harris rediscovers all the ingredients that make this southernmost region of Portugal so irresistible

I'M on Culatra island, a short ferry hop from the Algarve town of Olhao.

Only in recent years have tourists deigned to visit the latter, until 20 years ago one of the poorest in the Algarve, crime-ridden and infested by drugs gangs.

Today, it’s the starting point for an enlightening adventure on Culatra, as a speedboat water taxi whisks me there in less than 15 minutes.

It costs €100 for five passengers and €25 for each additional one, while the ferry is just €6 per person and takes 30 minutes.
