IT is well known that the Dead Sea is situated at the lowest point on Earth. But until 1837 nobody knew that this large body of water was actually below sea level.
This fact was discovered by chance, the result of a challenge presented to a group of scientists in the 1930s by the British Royal Geographic Society setting them the more than daunting task of determining the exact height of the Dead Sea.
