Paul Harris visits a hotel in the capital steeped in history, tradition and mystery

IT must be at least 30 years since I last stayed at London’s historic St Ermin’s Hotel.

On that occasion I could have been forgiven for imagining I’d arrived at the wrong place — it had been transformed into a Swiss Alpine hotel, complete with appropriate signage and fake snow near the entrance.

Such transformation over the years has been the norm for the St Ermin’s, whose unique design has been beloved of filmmakers.
