What the Dickens! Why Victorian Britain comes annually to Amelia Island

FAIRBANKS House looms large before me - a sprawling Victoria mansion all decked out for Christmas.

It strikes me immediately that this could be the perfect setting for an Agatha Christie house party with any number of potential murder suspects.

I’m greeted warmly by Tammy, a general factotum, before I can even set foot on the first step, and it soon becomes apparent that I’m to be the only guest in this splendid, sprawling mansion in Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island.

Where, you might ask, is that? But more about it later...

Tammy shows me to my room, The Library, promises me a homemade cookie and tells me she will be soon leaving for the night.

“So, I’ll be the only person here all night?” I ask.

“Apart from Mr Fairbanks,” she fires back.

It takes me a moment to twig.
