Baron fell so in love with beautiful area

SPREAD across an area of around five kilometres, the Ramat HaNadiv Memorial Garden and Nature Park is the final resting place of Baron Edmond de Rothschild and his wife Adelheid.

It is strategically ensconced on the southern end of Mt Carmel, commands breathtaking views down and over the steep Carmel foothills to the narrow coastal plain and the Mediterranean below.

Ramat HaNadiv — which translates to Heights of the Benefactor — is situated on the outskirts of Zichron Yaacov, a town founded on land bought in 1882 by a group of families from Romania, members of the Hovevei Zion movement and who named their settlement Zamarin.

Beaten by the harshest of natural elements, including rampant diseases like malaria and swamp fever, the new immigrants soon found themselves in dire straits.
