Far from the madding crowd, hidden gem of Amelia Island

IF Florida’s your choice, but the oppressive heat of the south — and the crowds are not — the state’s hidden gem is just the place.

Add breathtaking scenery, relatively untouched Atlantic-facing beaches, spectacular sunsets and an enviable restaurant scene and you have Amelia Island, a 13- mile long, two-mile wide Florida treasure.

Amusingly, when I visited in December for the annual Dickens festival, some residents jokingly suggested I shouldn’t write about the destination because they didn’t want their peaceful life interrupted.

But, joking apart, Amelia Island is unsurprisingly becoming increasingly popular.
