THE first lesson for visitors to the Isle of Man is not to refer to England as the mainland.
This tiny island in the Irish Sea, just a short hop by plane from Manchester or Liverpool, is a self-governing British crown dependency whose head of state is King Charles, although there he holds the title Lord of Mann.
King Charles, though, unlike his royal predecessors until 1450, did not receive a falcon, which was once an established tradition.
As far as Manxmen are concerned, the Isle of Man is the mainland.
The second salutary lesson is: Don’t question the way your hotel breakfast chef prepares your Manx kippers.
