THE Alexander River, also known as Nachal Alexander or the Alexander Stream, flows through the nowadays lush agricultural heartlands of the Hefer Valley in Israel’s Mediterranean coastal plain.
It is a region that over a century ago was blighted with malaria-spreading mosquito-infested swamplands.
In recent years, the river suffered serious contamination from both Israeli and Palestinian industrial and agricultural enterprises in the West Bank,
causing huge environmental challenges.
